This came out pretty nicely. The reductive version doesn't have enough open white spaces to show the lighting on the face.

Perhaps the hardest thing in relief printing is knowing when to clear a section out and when to leave it solid dark. You did pretty well here though. If you enjoyed it, I'll look forward to seeing more.
Yes, I can see what you are saying. I am usually accustomed to making work with high contrast. I was aiming at making a subtle piece, kind of like Monet's haystacks that were painted right after the sun went down. I am glad I was able to print just the second layer so I could compare the two. The white one just seems to draw more attention. Hah, you live and you learn...

Also, if you're not sure you've got enough light in the first pass, print a few in a really light tone. If the lighter blue had been lighter still it would change a lot.
